Vikings

Show: Vikings

Verdict: Pretty Good

How much I’ve seen: Two seasons (the 4th season just ended)

Where you can stream it: The first 3 seasons and the first half of the 4th season are all on Amazon Prime

I don’t know much about the sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok, but he’s the main character of Vikings. I also have no idea how historically accurate it is, even though this show is on the History Channel. I mean, they’ve got this guy:

But the show does make for some pretty compelling watching. My brother described it to me as being like Sons of Anarchy with vikings instead of a biker gang and I couldn’t come up with a better description than that if I tried. Ragnar is the first viking to raid England, and early on he kidnaps a Catholic priest and takes him as a slave. The two seasons I’ve seen involve power struggles first with Rangar’s earl and then with the viking king. There’s also some interesting stuff with that priest and him dealing with his faith and acclimating to a new culture. There’s some family drama with Ragnar’s wives and children, too. The show gets pretty violent, as you might imagine. But I was pretty shocked when they showed a guy being executed via blood eagle.

I found it hard to classify this show because when I’m not watching it, I don’t really think that much about it. But when I sit down to watch one episode before I know it I’ve finished an entire season and I’ve stayed up well past when a reasonable person would have gone to sleep. One last thing I’ll mention is that I find it difficult to keep track of time in the show. There’s multiple years between seasons 1 and 2, but months can pass inside of single episodes. I guess that makes sense given the time period and just how long it takes to travel, but they don’t do a great job of explaining how time passes and it can catch you off guard occasionally.
